Cerebral Palsy Doctors

How Do They Treat You?

There are a few different ways that your doctor might choose to treat your child’s CP. One of the things about cerebral palsy is that there are four different types. Each type requires a slightly different treatment in order to achieve the greatest effectiveness. For example, some children with CP will suffer seizures. As a result, the doctor might prescribe anti-seizure medication. In addition, he or she might suggest equipment that can improve your child’s quality of life. For example, he or she might prescribe a helmet to offer your child improved head support.

Many of the children who have CP will also experience respiratory problems. This could mean respiratory distress, asthma, or other breathing problems. The way that the doctor chooses to treat your child will largely depend on the type of respiratory problem experienced. Other symptoms and issues can also have a negative impact on your child.

Some of these issues include:

  • Skin problems
  • Hearing and vision problems
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Sensory impairment

What Does the Prognosis Look Like?

Especially during the first two to four years of your child’s life, your doctor will work closely with your child to ensure that he recovers as well as possible. Fortunately, CP is not a degenerative disorder.  However, the prognosis depends on the severity of the disorder. Some people will experience a more severe case of CP than others. Some cerebral palsy specialists have personal experience with this condition, making it easier for them to understand it. When your doctor works in close conjunction with your baby, you will see great results. It is important to note, however, while your doctor and physical therapist can help your child to improve, you have to be the one to make your child follow through with it.

You should anticipate frequent pediatrician and specialty visits.  Doctors will have to evaluate your child in order to offer the best possible care.  Birth disorders like this can be costly, and you may have to seek financial assistance to get through it. Over the course of a child’s life, you can pay up to $900,000 for medical care, and this will likely rise in the foreseeable future. This is one of the many reasons to seek assistance.
