Infant Skull Fractures

How Do Infants Get Skull Fractures?

Infant skull fractures happen during a difficult delivery process where the child gets lodged in the mother’s pelvic region. In some cases, this could be because the child was too big for a regular birth, leading to problems. When the child gets stuck, they have a higher risk of suffering head trauma, leading to a birth injury known as cerebral palsy. When this happens, the doctor might pull too hard to try to lower the risk of brain damage in some cases. But, pulling too hard can cause baby skull fractures. They might also employ a birth-assisting tool, like forceps, known to cause injuries like this.

There are also cases when a child is going through the birth canal; this could cause a lot of pressure that leads to infant skull fractures. This becomes especially true when the mother has prolonged contractions because it increases the pressure on the child.

Can You Stop This from Happening?

In most cases, skull fractures can almost always be stopped through greater care. If the child gets dropped by medical personnel, in most cases, it could have been prevented through greater attention to detail. It’s just like in a car accident where someone has suffered a skull fracture, and it could have been prevented with greater care on the road. While infant skull fractures can be prevented, it’s a natural fact of life that accidents happen. While you do your best, you can’t always keep everything bad from happening. But, if someone on the medical staff is at fault, you could file a lawsuit and get the compensation you deserve.

Different Types of Skull Fractures

There are three main types of skull fractures. They are:

  • Linear skull fractures
  • Depressed skull fractures
  • Diastatic skull fractures

Linear skull fractures tend to happen after childbirth. These are often no too serious. Next is a depressed skull fracture, and it can be a lot more serious. Depressed fractures happen when the skull sinks inwards. Normally, these are caused by birth-assisting tools. Finally, there are diastatic skull fractures. This type is quite common with newborns. Considering that the damage occurs along the suture, this fracture can damage as the child gets older.

There are a wide variety of different types of birth disorders that can take place. With this type of birth injury, doctors assess it on a case-by-case basis. Each case will differ from the next.
